With our mantra, “Every Day Adventures,” Wanderus is meant to connect city residents with the outdoors, to be an ambassador that enables people to find their outdoor sanctuary - whether it’s a park, a sport, or a tribe. In honor of the National Park Service, with which we share a common goal, we celebrate their 100th anniversary by dedicating this issue to them. Instead of your usual local mix, we’ll share some history, quotes, and events happening around DC with the NPS birthday theme. #ThankYouNPS
August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signs into law the Organic Act establishing the National Park Service.
"...to promote and regulate the use of the...national parks...which purpose is to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations." National Park Service Organic Act, 16 U.S.C.1.
If we had Yelp back then, the National Park Service would be flowing with 5-star reviews.
"There is nothing so American as our national parks.... The fundamental idea behind the parks...is that the country belongs to the people, that it is in process of making for the enrichment of the lives of all of us." President Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1936
"National parks are the best idea we ever had. Absolutely American, absolutely democratic, they reflect us at our best rather than our worst." Wallace Stegner, 1983
“The parks belong to all of us. This planet belongs to all of us… We have to have the foresight and faith in the future to do what it takes to protect our parks and our planet for generations to come.” Barack Obama, June 20, 2016

The Outdoor Office series at the Golden Triangle continues with the Rangerpalooza edition this Friday. Grab lunch with NPS park rangers, try on uniforms, wear that iconic hat, and ask for true tales from the front line. Like, what really happens when you try to befriend a wild bear?! If you’re not satisfied with the answer, go challenge them over the nearby ping-pong tables.

National Women’s Equality Day Observance @ BELMONT-PAUL WOMEN'S EQUALITY NATIONAL MONUMENT
Just earlier this year, the long-time headquarter of the National Woman’s Party, the Sewall-Belmont House, has become our first national monument to honor women’s equality. We’ve come a long way since women won the right to vote, but in the male-dominated outdoor industry there’s still much work to do. Celebrate the day, and don’t be afraid to ask yourself,“How can I help?”
Saturday, August 27 | 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM
America's Front Yard Family Festival @ CONSTITUTION GARDENS
Do you know what the NPS may wish before blowing out the birthday candles? That today’s youth aspires to become the future stewards of our national parks. So come on out to the Front Yard Family Festival this Saturday and let our kids be inspired. Enjoy games, live music, sing-alongs, and magic - highlights are Lego models of national parks, virtual reality park tours, 3-D printing of National Mall monuments and memorials, natural flora and fauna found in urban parks. Woot!
Where else can you witness both DC’s Tastiest Tomato and “Best Bud” Cannabis contests at the same place? The DC State Fair on Sunday is an excellent showcase of the region’s agricultural, artistic, and culinary talents - all things homegrown. This year, there will be a pet parade (with costumed and uncostumed pet owners), line dancing lessons, hydroponic workshops, and much more! And yes, I hear you, we’re not a state (yet).
