Winter's Momentary Promise - a view of Rock Creek Park via Lauren Worley
This month, we highlight the Black History Invitational Swim Meet, a unique event co-founded in 1987 by DC DPR and the United Black Fund, Inc. in honor of Black History Month. This year's event is titled “Rise Above the Waves” and will take place at Takoma Aquatic Center from February 17th to 19th. History + Minority Swimming Competition + Community Building, we love it! USA Swimming calls it the "premier minority swim competition in the United States and in the World." They’re expecting nearly 1000 youth to compete from across the country!
The promise (or threat) of snow continues to make it into the forecast. But except for the occasional snowflake, DC has largely avoided a snowy winter. What do you think, will DC have at least one big snow storm before the end of winter?
Adjacent to the very busy Georgia Avenue and Red Line metro tracks, Jesup Blair is a big, lively, at times noisy, park. It’s a great place for pick-up games of just about anything - there are basketball and tennis courts, lots of benches and picnic tables, a playground, and a rentable recreation center. Its multiple use cases and central location in Silver Spring make it a potential prime location for a fitness zone. For those seeking a quiet walk, the park has a nice area of just grass and tall trees leading up to the historic Blair House. Locals like it best in the spring when flowers are in bloom and the leaves on the trees come back, making it feel more like an urban escape.
Voted one of the best pocket parks in DC, Woodland-Normanstone Terrace Park is a beloved neighborhood park for residents who live between Woodley Park and Embassy Row. This little wilderness retreat traces its history back to the late 19th century where the land was home to just “two farms, woods, and trees.” Inside the park, there’s a memorial garden paying homage to Kahlil Gibran, an influential Lebanese-American artist, poet, and writer. We love the meditative setup of the space with a star-shaped fountain, limestone benches engraved with poetry quotes, and an abundance of flowers, trees, and grassy areas. Perfect for an afternoon of contemplation!
