The 16,500 lb Idaho Engelmann Spruce is hosted into position as the Capitol Christmas Tree via US Capitol Tree
The National Tree lighting is TONIGHTin President's Park. James Taylor, Marc Anthony, and The Lumineers are among the artists performing. Make sure to plan ahead if you are attending. If big crowds aren't your thing and big Christmas trees are, check out the trees sprouting up around the city at Union Station and in front of U.S. Capitol Building. If you find others, take pic and send it to @Wanderus to be featured.
Located at Pennsylvania Avenue and 15th Street NW, Pershing Park is one that we have passed many times walking and biking in downtown. It’s a stone’s throw away from a few high profile parks and public spaces like the White House, Lafayette Square, and the National Mall. The park features a fountain and pond, where the park plaza descends into a sunken basin surrounded by granite terracing. In years past, the water transformed into a beautiful wetland garden and sometimes an ice-skating rink during winter. It's the prospective site for a National World War I Memorial, that threatens to demolition the existing park. That said, when you visit it these days, Pershing Park walks a fine line of retaining the indelible charm of parks and its features falling to disrepair while various parties debate it's future.
Summer day at Ash Woods
via Bob C.
Situated south of the frequently trafficked Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is a quiet, tree-covered spot known as Ash Woods. Tucked away there sits the DC World War I Memorial - little do people know that the 60-foot high, marble site is actually modeled after the Pantheon in Rome! Ash Woods is such a hidden gem in the National Mall that you can barely spot any tourist there on a normal day. We love walking around this woody area, taking a nap under the surrounding tall, peaceful trees, and forgetting everything, but that moment. In fact, the place is so romantic that it was designed to host band concerts and is one of only three spots on the National Mall where you can get married. Be prepared to sit in the grass or bring a picnic blanket with you as there are no benches provided.
Celebrate the season with Pentagon Row to see their on-ice fireworks display, ice sculptures, and live music. Join in on the fun by trying your hand at ice skating and then warm up next to their huge stone fire place.
